The Okotoks U18 AA Oilers were recognized by the Okotoks Town Council at their April 8 meeting.

They took the league championship title in March and came third in provincials a few weeks after that.

A few members of the squad came forward to answer questions from the council.

Brandon Gray briefed them on the hard-fought overtime win that made them league champions.

"Our championship game was in West Central, so Sylvan Lake... Going into overtime it was 2-2 and Markus Vassell, who isn't here right now, scored the goal for us to win it... It was in the first minute."

Defenceman Jamie Gray recapped their close loss to the KC Colts.

"It was a good challenge and the last game that would've brought us to finals was a real heartbreaker there. With 15 seconds left the other team scored, broke the tie, and we just weren't able to make the cut there."

They were able to take bronze with a win over the TRAC Wolverines.

Strathcona ultimately took the provincial Crown.

Prompted by Mayor Tanya Thorn, Jamie Gray recalled his favourite part of the season.

"I'd say it was overcoming our little drought there in January. I was really proud of our team, how we came together and were able to start winning again."
