Flags are being flown at half-mast today.

Several municipalities throughout the province, including in Okotoks and High River, have been lowered to half-mast for the day to recognize the National Day of Remembrance for the battle of Vimy Ridge.

During World War I, the Canadian military was tasked with taking Vimy Ridge from the Germans, as part of the Arras Offensive organized by the French and British.

By attacking Vimy Ridge, the Canadians were helping to divert German resources from the French assault.

From April 9-12, 1917, the Canadians fought and took Vimy Ridge from the Germans.

During the battle, 10,600 Canadians were either killed or wounded, while there were approximately 20,000 German casualties.

The battle for Vimy Ridge is Canada's most celebrated military victory.

The flags will be returned to full mast on Wednesday, April 10.
