A roadside toilet along Highway 2 northbound in Nanton is being put on the back burner for now.

Chamber of Commerce President Becky Scott brought the idea forward to town council.

She says it's an issue that's been discussed for a number of years but just hasn't been done so it's something the chamber decided to pick up.

"I gathered a lot of data from around the world on the importance of public washrooms and how they can be done in a really creative way so that they actually become more of a tourist attraction and not just a functional toilet," she says. "Studies have shown that people are going to spend more time and more money in a town when public washrooms are available and especially for people with families or maybe some mobility issues, having access to a washroom is just really really so important."

She says it would be more stately than just a port-a-potty along the highway.

A decision on moving ahead this year was denied since the budget for this year has already been set.

"Council wants to spend a bit more time figuring out the exact location so it's done once, it's done right and there's no remediation required later if they haven't been put in the right spot," Scott says.

Council also wanted to leave the decision to the next council that's sworn in after this fall's election.
