A Southern Alberta Conservative leadership candidate is hoping to gain popularity in the north this go around.

Foothills Rocky View MLA Ted Morton ran for the title back in 2006.

He did very well then, winning all of the rural constituency's south of Ponoka except for two.

However Morton admits he struggled up north.

An early poll was released a few weeks back showing Gary Mar in the lead with 12 % of the vote and Morton in second with 8.

Morton says he's not surprised.

It also showed the PC's are out polling the Wildrose and other parties 3-to-1 and Morton says this shows progress.

Party members choose a new leader September 17th.
