The Town of Okotoks has been recognized for its dedication to seniors.

They were one of three municipalities to receive an "Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award" from the provincial government.

It was part of the 2023 Seniors Service Awards, honouring Albertans who work to improve the lives of seniors in their communities.

Minister's Seniors Service Awards are presented to individuals, organizations, and businesses.

Additionally, the Alice Modin Award is given to individuals or couples 65 years or older who have been prominent volunteers in their community, the Special Service All-Star Award is given to an individual or organization that promotes healthy aging programs and services, and three municipalities are given Age-friendly Alberta Recognition Awards.

The Town of Okotoks received the latter award, along with the Town of Innisfail and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Okotoks' Age Friendly Community Resolution was put in place in May of 2021 as a commitment to meet the needs of its aging population.

They're currently running an Age-Friendly Speaker Series, with several speaking events planned through October.

Another Foothills-area award recipient was Cathy Hume of Diamond Valley, who was one of three people to receive a service award in the Individual category.

Cathy has been working with seniors for over 30 years and served as President of the Calgary Seniors Housing Forum Society for 14 years.
