With the growing concerns of drought this year, the town of Nanton is asking their residents to familiarize themselves with the Town's Water Conservation Plan.

Under Stage 1, Nanton residents may do outdoor watering twice a week, either first thing in the morning or in the evening before bed.

Odd-numbered addresses (those ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) can only water on Thursdays and Sundays, while even-numbered addresses can only water on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Both groups can only water between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. or between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

During this stage, applications for water conservation exemptions for newly seeded lawns or freshly planted sod may be issued.

If it becomes prudent to do so, the Town will move the water restrictions to Stage 2, which restricts outdoor water use even further.

All outdoor water use, including non-commercial washing of vehicles and filling of jacuzzies, is restricted to the twice-weekly watering schedule.

Existing irrigation or watering permits for metered commercial/industrial irrigation or for new residential lawns may be suspended, with no new approvals being issued.

Bulk water sales will also be suspended.

Once Stage 3 is implemented, all outdoor water use is strictly prohibited.

Water usage for households and non-residential use may become controlled through district flow restrictions.

The Chief Administrative Officer may enforce a further reduction of water consumption by major non-residential water consumers under this Stage.

If Stage 3 has been in effect for fourteen days or more, the Town may implement a special metered rate to discourage water consumption wastage by residential and non-residential consumers may come into effect.

In order to conserve water, the Town is reminding people to follow the 4 R's of water conservation.

  • Reduce: Look for ways to use less water by becoming conscious of the amount you use and the amount you need.
  • Retrofit: Place running toilets and fixtures with more water-efficient models or retrofit your existing appliance with water-saving devices
  • Repair: Fix those current leaks. Most leaks are easily fixed by a simple task
  • Reuse: Rather than running a tap to rinse or clean vegetables or dishes, try filling a basin or your sink to prevent unused water from being wasted. Rainwater runoff is a great source for outdoor lawn, garden, and flowerbed watering.
