High River Town Council got an education on the sport of pigeon racing at its last meeting.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says members of the Calgary Pigeon Racing Club called have the Town after it redid its Animal Control Bylaw, prohibiting pigeons in town.

"Little did we know that there's kind of two schools on having pigeons at your home," he says. "One group are those that do the racing pigeons and the other group is just people that raise pigeons for whatever reason. So, when we did the bylaw and we started to contact these people that had the pigeons a few of these racing guys said 'whoa, whoa, whoa, why can't I have my pigeons, I take care of things and they don't cause a nuisance in the neighbourhood' and so we just had these guys come and educate us on this."

He says there are eight or nine members of the club that live in High River but the Town estimates there are about 20 homes with pigeons and there's a big difference in how they're cared for.

Administration is going to look again at the bylaw to see if there's fair balance can be achieved.

The Calgary Pigeon Racing Club has been around since 1904.
