A young Okotokian has won the Optimist International 2024 Essay Writing contest in their district.

The annual contest showcases the writing talents of young people and allows them to develop skills in representing their views and ideas in written form.

This district is one of the largest, encompassing Alberta, Montana, Saskatchewan & Northern Wyoming.

Vice-president of the Okotoks Optimist Club, Tammie Self, says the winner will be announced and congratulated tomorrow (March 22) at the Murray Arens just before the Okotoks Bisons game.

"Mayor Tanya Thorn will be presenting the award, our chairperson Nathan Konradt will be there as well as myself to present the framed certificate and the cheque, of course."

Winners of the Optimist International Essay Contest are presented with a $2,500 college scholarship.

Each club runs their own local version of the contest, with the district version following soon after.

"Last year we had 15 participants, this year we only had five. It's an annual thing here in Okotoks, and the district competition is also annual and it follows right behind the clubs," says Self.

The reveal is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at the Murray Arena just before the Bisons game, and the Okotoks Optimist Club will be sticking around outside the arena entrance afterwards for anyone wanting to learn more about them.
