A long time Foothills School Division Teacher, Trustee and Board Chair has passed away.

Doug Gardner was on the board from 2003 to 2017.

The Division's Assistant Superintendent Drew Chipman says Gardner spent his life in the classroom and in the boardroom.

"He became a Trustee in 2000 and served right until 2016. So he certainly had a long history here in the Foothills School Division representing the Town of High River. I served with him from 2003 right until the end of his term in 2016. I can tell you he was always a big supporter of students, a big supporter of the school division."

Chipman, says Gardner did a lot for schools in High River.

"He represented High River very well. He made sure High River's concerns were first and foremost. He was great, especially during the flood he was a key figure in making sure the Foothills School Division rebuilt here. There was a lot that he did for the community."

Gardner was 76 and has been suffering from cancer.

He's survived by his wife, daughters and extended family.

A celebration of his life is planned for Saturday, January 4 at 2 p.m. in the gym at Senator Riley School in High River.
