The Special Public Avalanche Warning issued on December 23rd has been extended into the weekend, though only for Purcells and Kananaskis Country.

The warning urges recreational users of back-country and front-country avalanche terrain of a weak layer of snowpack in the regions.

A blanket of snow left by a storm that swept Western Canada remains on that weak layer, increasing the chance of human-triggered avalanches.

Avalanche Canada, Parks Canada, and Kananaskis Country are all warning of the potential for avalanches, asking those in the area to check avalanche forecasts ahead of time.

Those in the region are also urged to pack rescue gear for outings in those regions.
