Not only is distracted driving a major safety risk, but it could also put a nasty dent in your pocketbook.

Okotoks peace officer Trevor LaDuke, says the consequences could go so far as to cause some unwanted changes with insurance.

"Distracted driving is a $300 fine and has three demerits. That ticket particularly can really affect a person's insurance."

LaDuke says distracted driving isn't the only problem.

Distracted walking has also put pedestrians at risk.

"A lot of people just assume that traffic will stop for them and they continue walking across the road while using their cell phone, and it can lead to a lot of accidents, unfortunately."

LaDuke says drivers need to make sure to pay attention, especially with school back in session and would like to remind pedestrians, especially teenagers, to put their phones down and look when crossing the street.
