If you're up early in the morning, chances are you've heard the sounds of birds chirping to announce the arrival of the new day.

That's because most of the song birds who come to the Foothills have now arrived in time for breeding season.

High River's resident bird expert, Greg Wagner, says they were a little late this year, but are here now.

"Seen lot's of Warblers coming through. Yellow-Rumped and Orange Crowned are usually the most numerous. Yellow Warblers, which breed in the area here are back too. Lot's of sparrows have been moving through. I've had White Crown's and Lincoln Sparrows and Savannah's and Vespers."

Wagner, says one of his favourites is the Gold Finch, which showed up over the long weekend.

"For me Spring is at my mum's place, where she has these white blossoms on her crabapple tree and it's filled with about eight or 10 male Gold Finches. It's such a pretty thing to see and it always reminds me of Spring. Just keep some chopped up sunflower seeds around and you'll get some good shots of them."

He says there's no shortage of other species of smaller birds, including Hummingbirds, which he says are showing up in larger numbers every day.
