The Okotoks RCMP's latest crime stats show overall crime is down.

Mounties presented their quarterly update to Okotoks Town Council at their last meeting.

Detachment Commander Zane Semaniuk says it was a very positive second quarter, though he was quick to point out the statistics reflect the likely influence of the pandemic and the many health regulations that came with it.

Property crime saw a 42 per cent decrease from the same quarter last year, likely due to individuals working from home.

Sexual assaults saw a 33 per cent decrease from the same time last year, with other sexual offences down 75 per cent..

Another large decrease was reflected in motor vehicle accidents, down 58 per cent.

Assaults did go up the same quarter in 2019,up from 25 to 32, though they remain down 24 per cent from 2016.

Semaniuk says the Okotoks detachment remains COVID free, despite increased patrols in an effort to boost visibility within the community.
