The Foothills School Division's board of trustees has approved the distribution of the nearly $3 million in additional funding from the federal government.

The funding was announced in August and was distributed on a "per-student" basis as per the provincial government.

A majority, nearly $1.5 million, will be used for additional staffing in order to limit class sizes, student support, and the higher demand for at-home classes.

$700,000 will account for an expected need for guest teachers, with $250,000 for cleaning supplies and PPE.

Nearly $370,000 will be used for "local needs" across their 21 schools, including additional textbooks and other equipment, with $20,000 for substitute educational assistance, and $50,000 for custodial services.

FSD Board Chair Larry Albrecht was quoted in a release from the division:

"We appreciate the federal and provincial governments for recognizing the additional costs associated with a safe school relaunch. The funding will be used to help ensure our schools remain safe, caring, and welcoming learning environments."
