Harvey's Restaurants is joining McDonald's Canada in serving up sustainable beef to its customers.

They've partnered with the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) to source at least 30 per cent of the beef for its original burger from farms and ranches certified according to the Roundtable's standards.

The multi-stakeholder Roundtable launched their Certified Sustainable Beef Framework back in 2017, which is a voluntary audit and certification program allowing participating members of the supply chain to make sustainability claims in the areas of being economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible.

Any food product with the CRSB logo shows the beef has made its way through a fully certified sustainable supply chain.

CRSB Chair and Saskatchewan rancher, Anne Wasko, says they knew they wanted to follow up on the momentum built from McDonald's.

"This is something that's continuing to move forward. Consumers, customers, beef burger eaters are obviously telling these end users this is what they want, otherwise somebody like Harvey's or McDonald's wouldn't even be doing this."

Harvey's Chief Operating Officer, David Colebrook, says the company proudly sources 100 per cent Canadian beef for all its burgers.

"Supporting sustainable beef production builds on our existing commitment to Canadian farmers and ranchers who work hard every day to ensure a sustainably-raised, high quality, safe product that Canadians have come to trust and love," he said.

Wasko says in addition to the High River Cargill Plant being certified under the CRSB framework, an Eastern Canada packer, Atlantic Beef Products Inc., has recently been audited.

She says they're also looking forward to their annual meeting coming up in September in Montreal where they will be launching some new CRSB videos.
