Cleanfarms is collecting unwanted livestock medication and pesticide products across Southern Alberta Monday, October 22 to Friday, October 26.

They will have 20 sites set up south of Red Deer for farmers to drop off the unusable products free of charge in a safe and appropriate manner.

Western Region Business Manager with Cleanfarms, Shane Hedderson, says these are products which can't just be dumped down the drain.

"Farmers are one of the original stewards of the land. Of course they know more than anybody the value of land and keeping that land productive, so we're happy to be working on behalf of the industry who pays for this program. Everybody works together to make sure these products find the appropriate life, or death at the end of the useful lives, in a way that stays sustainable and in line with our stewardship mandate as folks in the agriculture indsutry."

Hedderson says, all the products collected from across Canada go to Swan Hills, Alberta to a high temperature incinerator which safely destroys all the products.

He reminds producers the collection is only for livestock medication and pesticide products, not fertilizer, treated seed, needles, or sharps.

Next fall they'll be collecting these products at sites in Northern Alberta.
