A fourth generation Chain Lakes area rancher is excited to officially be the NDP's candidate for the Livingstone-Macleod riding.

Cam Gardner's nomination meeting was held in Nanton on Sunday, February 24 which packed the Stuthornes on Main cafe.

Gardner says he's ready to tackle climate change issues by working with the agriculture sector, as well as continue the party's work in the back country.

"If you're enjoying the back country, you want to protect it, this (NDP) government is doing a great job at that, and we need to have a future where the next generation wants to take on the family farm."

Gardner, who's also the Reeve of the M.D. of Ranchland, says one of his framework ideas is to have large businesses looking for carbon offsets, pay farmers to store carbon in the soil.

Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips, who had asked Gardner to run in the election, was also at the event to show her support.

"And I'm a huge supporter of hers," Gardner says. "She did more in four years in the back country west of here all in Livingstone-Macleod than the Conservatives have done in 40 (years)."

Gardner says, they're ready to build teams and get out door knocking.

"Maybe try and bring some folks together, not be so partisan and jaded. It would be wonderful if we could just get people thinking about the issues."

Party volunteers say supporters contributed around $4,000 for Gardner's campaign at the meeting.
