An up and down first day for a trio of local bull riders at the Calgary Stampede Rodeo on Friday.

Black Diamond's Tyler Thomson was the best among locals, coming in third on the day with 83 points.

Chad Besplug out of Claresholm was just behind Thomson, his 82 points good for fifth on the day.

Reigning champion Scott Schiffner from Strathmore was bucked off of his bull, Cooper King.

Meanwhile, Millarville's Sam Kelts sits eigth in Saddle Bronc after landing a score of 75.5.

Cayley's Matt Lait also sits eighth in Bareback after day one with 77 points.
