United Way has created a new tool to help adults provide support for youth experiencing mental health issues.

The Natural Support tool describes real-life situations experienced by many youths and gives adults tips to be there for the youth in their life.

Yvette Biggs, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for United Way Calgary, says the tool is perfect for anyone who struggles to have tough conversations.

"People that may think something is wrong, or maybe a child is coming up to them with a specific issue, they may not have the tools to feel confident in providing the right information or talking in the right way. Those are the people we're trying to target with the tool."

The site gives advice on dealing with real-life scenarios relating to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, or self-harm.

Biggs says the advice isn't only for parents, but anyone who has a relationship with youths.

"A caregiver, relative, teacher, coach, mentor, friend - a lot of people have a circle of influence in a child or youth's life. And those are the people who have access to have those important conversations, so it's not just the parent or caregiver. It's open to that whole circle of influence."

The hope is that by providing a platform to help prepare adults for discussions about mental health, everyone can feel more comfortable discussing those types of issues.

"It's really about building those skills so important conversations can begin," Biggs said. "And also giving parents and caregivers the resources they need to take it to the next level."
