The Town of Okotoks is on the lookout for a resident to fill a vacant spot on the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board.

The board, which is mandated by the Municipal Government Act, serves as an independent adjudicator to resolve appeals and disputes relating to town developments.

Legislative Services Administrator Patty Huber says the position is likely to appeal to certain demographics, given the nature of the board.

"It can be an incredibly interesting board to sit on for our residents, this one specifically being sort of a quasi-judicial board, so a little more interesting maybe than some other boards, and requires a bit more training."

She says that training is currently administered a little differently than usual.

"The training currently, due to COVID, is being done all online. So there's a training requirement that I think takes three to four days, morning or afternoon, that the training can be done."

Unlike other town boards and committees, Huber says the SDAB doesn't hold regularly-scheduled weekly or monthly meetings.

"Typically the SDAB only meets when they receive an appeal. I think, generally speaking, we have maybe between two to five appeals per year in the Town of Okotoks."

While the presence of all members is preferable, only three members are required to be available for hearings.

The deadline to apply is February 21, 2021.
