A local three-year-old hero recently got a visit from the mayor.

Okotokian Brianne Horlings was able to successfully give her address and phone number in a 911 call to help her mom Hannah a few months ago.

When Mayor Tanya Thorn saw the story about it, she wanted to recognize Brianne as a local safety ambassador.

"We underestimate how strong and how smart our kids are sometimes. And so the fact that this little girl was able to make an impact in our community to a positive benefit, council really felt that that was something that we want to start highlighting some of those really positive and, you know, important conversations."

Council recognized Brianne in the council meeting on Monday, Feb. 14, with Brianne and her family present virtually.

Mayor Thorn was able to present the physical copy of the Okotoks Awesome Kid safety ambassador award to Brianne when she paid her family a visit the following day with some Okotoks swag in tow.

"It was just a filling experience. It was heart-filling. She's got this great smile... Made me realize that we need some different things for kids because the bubble wrap was the most important thing for Brianne, but she's just such a great little girl."

Thorn says it was something she learned through Mayor Bill Robertson, and she said council was happy to have some good news at the beginning of their meeting.

Brianne was also recognized previously by the EMS Foundation with a Young Hero award for what she did to help her mom when she unexpectedly passed out.

"For me anyways, it reminds me of that's who I'm doing the job I'm doing for today. It actually is so that she has got an amazing community when she is raising her own family."

Thorn says it's important for all parents to teach their kids when and how to call 911 in case of an emergency.
