Although not a green cart program that many have been hoping for, the Town of Okotoks has unveiled a new organic waste project.

Starting on November 22nd, Okotokians can self-haul their food waste to the Okotoks Recycling Centre where bins will be located.

Okotoks Recovery Resource Manager Paul Lyons says this program could potentially cut down on the amount of garbage heading to local landfills.

"Anywhere between 40-56% of the regular garbage composition is food waste. So if we are able to do this now, or at least start, we would definitely see a reduction in the garbage that we are currently collecting."

The majority of the food waste that will be accepted by the town will be general table scraps, check out the Town of Okotoks' website for more details.

Once collected by the town, crews will use the organic materials for composting purposes around Okotoks.

Lyons says that using these materials for compositing is a proven effective method.

"Compost is as good, or in some cases, quite comparable or better than commercial grade fertilizer. Because it is a more complete fertilizer."

Many Okotokians have been vocal in their wishes for a green cart program to go along with the current garbage and recycling programs the town operates.

Lyons says that there has been a big push from residents to use more organic waste in Okotoks.

"The town is anticipating good participation from residents. We will provide enough information, communication and education on how this program can work. And the benefits [as well], so that residents can see the value of participating in this program."

Town of Okotoks staff will also be putting on a customer appreciation BBQ and launch celebration at the Recycling Centre on the 22nd. On a first come, first served basis, residents will be given specialty kitchen catchers and compostable liners while they dispose of their food waste.

The BBQ will run from 10:00 until 2:00.
