The Town of Okotoks is moving forward with a task force to manage the urban deer population.

Town Council approved the task force at the Monday August 19 meeting.

Parks Manager Christa Michailuck thinks the task force is a good way to find a solution.

"Administration recommended the task force because its a good way to create a collaborative approach to involve community members and find Okotoks-made solutions to help manage urban deer," she said.

There have been many reports both online and to Town offices that residents have run into a high amount of aggressive deer this year.

"It seems like there's more this year, but it's a bit of a difficult item to track," Michailuck said. "I suspect many go unreported, but some people may report to different jurisdictions. It's hard to know how many there really are."

The deer task force was brought up at a Council meeting in June after a community member reported he and his family was attacked by deer twice in two weeks.

Michailuck will discuss the regulations of the task force at a Council meeting in September, including the proper permitting and beginning to recruit members for the task force.
