Burgeoning local filmmakers might have an easier time getting started, with the Okotoks Public Library having recently acquired some new film equipment.

A camera, tripod, microphone and boom pole, video lights, and reflector are among the selection available for loan.

The equipment was acquired via a donation from the Okotoks Art Council, and with guidance from the Fort McMurray Film Festival Society.

OAC President Russel Thomas was quoted in a release from the library, citing the importance of available equipment for independent filmmakers.

"One of the barriers to artistic growth in this discipline is having access to the appropriate equipment. We are pleased to have been able to make this donation and partner with the Okotoks Public Library to share with their members."

The new film equipment is available for three-week loans for library users 18 and older.

Library Director Lara Grunow says they've also made some additions to their outdoor equipment.

"We also have disc golf sets, after speaking with the Town of Okotoks recreation group to see what was needed. I know that in Riverside Park just across the bridge from the library, you can go now and play disc golf. That's a sport you can do 365 days of the year."

She says they've also added to their ever-popular snowshoe collection.

"Snowshoeing has been hugely popular ever since we added them to our collection. I think we've had them for two or three years now. Being able to add on the children's size is wonderful."
