A new snow-clearing program in Okotoks aims to connect people in need with Snow Heroes willing to help.

The Snow Heroes program provides signs for people who aren't able to shovel their own walkways and driveways, which will indicate that they need a hand this winter.

Canadians are already used to shovelling their neighbour's drive or walkway as a courtesy, and the program is intended to make it that much easier for locals to lend a hand to people who need a hand.

Community Wellness team lead Sian Anderson says it's pretty simple for anyone looking to be a Snow Hero.

"It's as simple as going out and looking for signs, they'll easily be able to identify those households that need a bit of extra help this winter, and you can help those people out."

It'll also save time for volunteer groups.

"It also provides the opportunity for groups, like a sports team or a youth group of some kind that want to go and help out in the community, they can easily identify anyone that needs that little bit of extra help. It means we're able to provide more opportunities for people to help out but also more opportunities for people to ask for help," says Anderson.

Locals in need of a Snow Hero can contact the Okotoks Family Resource Centre at (403) 995-2626 or sign up on the town's website.

Snow Heroes replaces the town's previous Adopt a Sidewalk program.
