Still no start date for high school football in Alberta.

Canada West and the CIAU cancelled their fall athletic programs, including football last week, but high school sports could be a bit different.

Holy Trinity Academy Knights Football Coach, Matt Hassett says he was surprised at the timing of the announcement for college sports.

"I was really surprised by that too. And I you know, I just wondered if it had more to do with budget cuts at the post secondary level, I'm not sure. But it seems a little early, from my perspective anyway. For what that's worth."

Hassett says what's going to happen to high school sports is still up in the air.

He suspects it will be tied to what form the Province takes for kids returning to school in the fall.

Hassett, says it's up to their governing body, the Alberta School's Athletic Association.

"The ASAA is really trying to prepare to run sports. What that's going to look like, we're not sure yet. Whether it's pushing the season back a little bit or starting on time like usual. Maybe pushing part of it back later in the year. Like, there's been all sorts of options. But nothing, at least from my understanding, has been decided yet."

Football Alberta has given the go-ahead for community based teams to return to the field, but only in limited numbers and with no games.
