The Town of High River is dealing with ongoing issues with motorized vehicles tearing up the land and banks along the Highwood River on the west end of town.

Council approved spending $25,000 to put fences up along 12th Ave from the Baker Creek Subdivision west to the town boundary then north to the river.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says the town has placed barricades and rocks to block access, but the offenders pull them out of the way or find another way in and they are making a mess.

"It's the Town of High River land so we want it to look nice," said Snodgrass. "It doesn't have to be expensive just a nice well built fence to try to discourage people from running their trucks back there."

The Town is only discouraging motorized vehicles.

"It's a great place for mountain biking and going on little hikes. It's fantastic back there. We are not going to discourage people from in there we just don't want quad in there, we don't want your truck in there, we don't want your dirt bike in there, its not a free for all."

Council approved adding an additional $25,000 to the operating budget from General Municipal Reserves for the project.

In addition to the fence, signage will be put in place to allow enforcement to take a more active role in helping to protect this area.
