Following Up with CN Rail After Grain Backlog and Bill C-49

After the recent grain backlog, farmers are wondering how the railways plan to move this year's crop.

CN Rail’s Executive Vice-President, Sean Finn, says they look at Stats Canada, weather maps, and talk with farmers to predict how much grain they need to move.

Finn says, for every dollar the rail company earns, 25 cents is being invested to improve the rail network.

He says, about 10 to 15 per cent of CN Rail's revenue comes from moving grain.

Ag-related Products Make the Canada's List of Tariffs on U.S.

On Friday, June 29, Canada released its list of tariffs in response to the United States announced tariffs on imports of certain steel and aluminum products from Canada.

The U.S. has applied a 25 per cent tariff to steel and a 10 per cent tariff to aluminum.

Canada will matched those amounts on U.S. steel and aluminum in addition to a ten per cent tariff on a number of other U.S. products.

Some of the ag-related items include, coffee, yogurt, maple syrup, ketchup, whisky, and certain types of insecticides and fungicides.

The tariffs came into effect on Sunday.

 

Farmers Report Seeding Less Canola and Soybeans

Stats Canada said Canadian farmers reported seeding less canola and soybeans acres this year, crops that were both at record levels in 2017.

Total seeded acreage of dry peas and lentils have also decreased this year, potentially as a result of tariffs imposed by India.
