Producers Will Need a Prescription to Buy Livestock Antibiotics

Starting December 1st of 2018, you will need a prescription before buying a medically important antibiotic for livestock production.

Karin Schmid with Alberta Beef Producers says, the change will effect purchasing penicillin, tetracycline, scour boluses, sulfa drugs, and access to some raw in-feed product.

Schmid says, this is a good time to make sure you have a veterinary- patient client relationship, meaning your vet is familiar with your operation and herd health protocols.

She says, prescriptions are good for a year and can include refills, but they will vary depending on the situation.

2018 Livestock Care Conference Coming Up Soon

A big name in livestock welfare is coming to Olds this spring.

Temple Grandin will be speaking at the 2018 Livestock Care Conference on March 15th, put on by Alberta Farm Animal Care.

The Use of Hormones in Beef Production

Dr. Joe Schwarz from McGill University recently spoke at the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference in Saskatoon.

Schwarz says, it's scientifically incorrect to suggest beef raised with the use of growth hormones is different from beef raised the conventional way.

He says, every animal has natural hormones, adding that growth hormones in beef production undergo rigorous testing before approval.

 

Investment in the Pulse Industry

Yesterday, Federal Ag Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, announced an investment of over $575,000 to Pulse Canada.

The investment is for for food service market research and development projects that will benefit farmers and processors.
