Oilers are having a Spak-tacular playoff run

The Okotoks Oilers are giving doubters a run for their money after forcing a game seven in Brooks tomorrow night (April 30).

After missing out on a bye into the second round, the Oilers have shown grit by toughing it out with the Spruce Grove Saints in a three-game sweep, to now bringing it to a dream kids have while playing road hockey with friends: a game seven.

Team captain Dean Spak has been nothing but impactful during this run, getting three game-winners with one of them closing out the series with the Saints.

Spak would get two goals in game six with one to open the scoring and the other to close the scoring with an overtime winner. On the latter, Spak got himself in front of the net, a prime position to get any rebounds that came his way. Sam Hall would put one on the net, creating a scramble in front that Spak would knock in.

"I put the puck up top to the D-man, Hallsy made a great play, I looked down, the puck hit me in the foot and I just tried to put it in as fast as I could," Spak said.

Spak has made an office in front of the net and it has paid dividends for him as he keeps finding a way to get the puck to cross the goal line. His first goal of game six came the exact same way, banging in a loose puck in front of the net.

"That is something Deis and I (head coach and GM of the Oilers) have talked about. I would say most of my goals are in there, so if I can be around the net as much as possible, it's where I find success," he said.

Spak had to lead his group even being down three guys with Connor Gourley, Rylan Brown, and assistant captain Logan Magowan out of the action. Even though they were down, the Green and Gold dug deep and forced a game seven.

"Our room, we kind of just said there are two ways the game could go, we can win or we can lose. We were going to go give our best and give everything we got tonight," Spak said.

"Going into game seven too, we might not have our full lineup again. So, it's going to be the same thing, just play our hearts out and see how it goes."

The Oilers and their captain won't try and force any change in how they go about their business leading up to game seven. Instead, they will take things period by period.

"I try and play the same way, but maybe try to motivate the guys a little bit more. We have a couple of guys who do that really well in the room like, (Brody) Maguire, (Kade) Turner and (Brett) Huxley. Those guys help out a lot with that," he said.

"This is my first game seven. It's going to be a lot of emotions but, Deis will get us fired up tomorrow and we will see how it goes."

"The fans did a great job again last night, it got us fired up, it was awesome."
