The High River Recycling Centre has teamed up with three other towns to bring glass recycling to High River.

Local glass recycling was brought about by a partnership between Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Okotoks and High River to reduce waste going to the Foothills Regional Landfill.

High River's Recycling Supervisor, Peter Leek, says our local recycling centre will now be accepting items like pickle jars, spaghetti sauce jars and other clear glass items.

"It will just be your glass jars, no ceramics, no mirrors and no safety glass at this time."

Leek says glass recycling used to just be sent to the landfill where it would just get buried.

"In the past glass was just taken out, collected and taken to the landfill and then buried." Leek adds "Now we've got other uses for it here and with those new uses they'll be able to better utilize it and keep some tonnage out of the landfills."

Some of the ways to re-use glass Leek says, is in craft materials.

"The company that we're using to pick it up is going to be using it for signage, glass beads and stuff like that."

Residents can bring clear glass to the Recycling Centre now as long as the lids are separated and sorted properly.

The lids can go in the same bin as tin cans.

Leek says they're looking forward to see how much extra waste they can divert from the landfill through glass recycling.
