Wildrose Health Critic Drew Barnes is calling for change in the Alberta Health System. He says the main problem is a lack of innovation.

"There's so many systemic problems with our health services and Alberta Health. And the fact that we're spending 21.5 billion dollars next year, the most per capita in the whole country, we have to look at things different. We have to put in some more innovations, some more choice, and I think until the NDP government realizes that we'll always be short of resources."

He says we need to make better use of our resources by empowering doctors and nurses.

"We have to ensure that resources get pushed down to the front line workers, rather than bureaucrats. We have to make the system as activity-based as possible. And, then we have to put in the oversight. there's thousands of good front line professionals, from doctors to mental health people, to nurses, let's give them the resources and the autonomy to make some good decisions."

Barnes says a big concern is the use of a centralized system.

"First of all, we need local decision making. This big centralized system of decisions made out of Edmonton are not serving Albertans, especially throughout the province, and I would say even the big cities."

Barnes says a key thing is for the government to implement the changes they've discussed so far in the Mental Health Review.
