Canada's largest feedlot is calling it quits.

Western Feedlots shareholders have decided to wind down operations at their feedlots including west of High River, Strathmore and Mossleigh.

Western Feedlots will continue to feed and market the existing cattle and after they are marketed, western will be suspending operations.

They say the poor political and economic environment here in Alberta were contributing factors.

Highwood MLA Wayne Anderson says they had a lot of things working against them.

"This is a direct impact as to the NDP government's current political environment that they've created and economic environment," Anderson says. "There's a lot of fear, doubt and uncertainty going on right now. I remember talking to Dave Plett about Bill 6  when it came in and he was quite upset about that, that had an impact and then the increase in corporate taxes had another layer of impact and then minimum wage and now with the carbon tax coming in January 1, I guess the shareholders felt now's the time to get out before any more damage is done."

Western will continue its farming operations.
