One local wildlife expert wants to see High River promote bird watching opportunities as part of any new branding for the Town.

It's not a new idea as Greg Wagner first proposed it to High River Town Council back in February of 2013

Wagner made his pitch again at the branding meeting Monday, January 30, at the Highwood Memorial Centre.

He says the Town would get a lot of bang for their buck.

"It's not really going to cost that much. You can do a lot of things. You could ultimately come in and put in a building or something like that. But you really don't need it. Put up a few signs indicating this is where the Hughes/Mercer Property is, indicating where Frank Lake is, and that would be a really good start to bringing people into this town."

He says similar dedicated bird watching areas in Red Deer and Lethbridge attract up to 70,000 visitors each, per year.

He admits it's unlikely High River would draw that many people, but even a fraction of that would be good news to the business community, as the extra visitors would be spending plenty of money in local businesses.

Each time he's brought the idea up, it's had good support from Council and others, but has yet to be acted on.

Wagner says he'll keep "plugging away."
