Vulcan is now home to a unique concept in eco energy.

Over the weekend the town held the grand opening of its new solar park which was brought to life through different funds and grants with Alberta Energy, Bullfrog Power, Fortis, and Fowler Glass Works.

Kim Fath, Chief Administrative Officer for Town of Vulcan, says the high tech, eco friendly art stands out.

"Basically it's a showcase for solar energy and the idea you can integrate it into a park setting and it's aesthetically pleasing," he says. "Our local Kinette Club donated $25,000 to extend the walking paths through it then we took donations for benches. It's turned otherwise unused land into a nice park and green space."

An educational component was added to creating the park by getting students at County Central High School to help make the design.

Fath says the electricity generated by the solar park will go back to the town.

"The production of the park will put off approximately 25 kilowatts and it's micro generation so we're offsetting a sign that we have then it'll be production back to the grid."

The grand opening was held on Saturday and included a barbeque for guests hosted by Bullfrog Power and Peavey Mart.
