Immunization clinics open Monday October 24 across the province.

Dr Martin Lavoie, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health, says concerns about the effectiveness of the nasal mist for children has been allayed.

"We came to the conclusion that we think this vaccine is effective and it's also safe obviously," he says. "The only thing we couldn't say anymore is that it was more effective than the regular vaccine, the injectable."

There may come a day where we won't have to get a flu  shot every year.

Dr. Gerry Predy, AHS' Senior Medical Officer of Health says that day could come in the next few years.

"There's research underway to develop what's called a universal flu vaccine, so develop a vaccine that  provides immunity through exposure to the part of the virus that doesn't vary from one year to another," Dr. Predy says. "The research is getting close and in the next few years I expect we'll see a type of flu vaccine that you don't have to get every year."

Immunizations are available starting Monday at doctor's offices, pharmacies and AHS clinics.

Flu season's here.
