Urban chickens are coming to High River, but first residents need to complete a training course. Owner of Jungle Out There Pet Services Cassandra Kirkpatrick says she's partnered with the town to provide in-depth workshops starting on June 25.

"We're going to talk about everything from how to over winter birds to different housing and coop ideas, what to feed them, we will discuss the bylaws as well, different breeds of birds that people can look into, some bio-security considerations."

Kirkpatrick says people will also learn how to recognize diseases in birds and will get some hands on experience with chickens. She says there's still time to set up a coop this season.

"There are a couple different options people can look into. There is a rental hen and coop program called The Urban Chicks, they're out in Millarville. They're one option for people that are looking to get into it but maybe not sure if they want to do it long term."

Kirkpatrick says she'll be running more workshops to give residents ample opportunity to get the training they need.

"Upon completing the workshop attendees will receive a certificate of completion. I am going to be running some more workshops in July and August. Really looking forward to meeting people and talking about keeping urban chickens."

The workshops will be $25 and held at the Culture Centre. The first workshop is June 25 from 10 am to 1 pm. Sessions will also be held on July 27, August 24, and September 24 from 6 to 9 pm.

Registration closes five days before each workshop runs. For more information or to register for the sessions, contact Cassandra Kirkpatrick at 587-737-0737 or info@jungleoutthere.ca.
