Branding and Marketing expert Roger Brooks began his re-branding process Tuesday with residents discussing the future image of Okotoks.

The Town hired Brooks to come back and do a branding over haul after he visited and did an assessment in 2014. Local businesses and those inside and outside of Okotoks are encouraged to take part in the journey.

Brooks says the message from his presentation was about the important of setting yourself apart.

"Every single city, town, and village is at our finger tips in a fraction of a second via the web, so what sets Okotoks or a local business apart from everyone else?" he says. "What sets you apart from Innisfail which is on the north side of Calgary or Canmore on the west side?"

A quick questionnaire has been put together to help uncover what people want to see in a future brand for the town. The questionnaire is 10 questions long and Brooks says he'd like to see several thousand people take part ranging from high school students up to seniors.

Brooks says gathering public feedback plays a huge role in moving forward.

"We're interested in what people outside think as much as people on the inside so for the next three weeks that's going to be a big priority, letting people weigh in on the future," he says. "Once we do that we'll figure out which of all these ideas makes the most sense economically and then we'll go through that process of building a plan, so it's not all marketing it's also product development."

Brooks says the main focus of the initiative is the downtown area, and says the town is currently seeing a conglomeration of strip malls rather than a central downtown gathering place.

The total process is expected to take about three to four months.
