Two people are dead following a crash on the Trans Canada Highway between Calgary and Chestermere.

Strathmore RCMP say the crash, which happened just before 11 Wednesday, October 18, ended up with the drivers of both cars dead and the road closed for several hours.

Police say the deceased are a 27 year old man from Chestermere and a 30 year old man from Calgary.

Mounties say so far their investigation reveals one of the vehicles was travelling east bound in the westbound lanes of Highway One, west of Chestermere near Rainbow Lake Road, causing the head on collision.

The collision remains under investigation and all possible contributing factors are being considered.

Highway One has since re-opened.
