A few more Foothills communities are going green with LED street light technology from Fortis Alberta.

Turner Valley and Vulcan, among other Southern Alberta towns, will soon have LED street lights installed.

Turner Valley will have about 144 lights converted and Vulcan will have about 157.

Natasha Russell, communications advisor with Fortis, says there's multiple pros to converting to the new technology.

"LED technology offers many benefits, including reduced energy consumption which results in lower costs for our customers," she explains. "The LED technology that Fortis will be installing will use a warmer light which will result in minimal blue light exposure."

According to Russell the feedback from Okotoks on their LED street lights has been great. Okotoks made the conversion from high-pressure sodium lights to LED in September 2016.

Russell says the initial application to convert street lights under the LED street light conversion program was made in April last year.

"At that time six communities including Canmore, Crowsnest Pass, Devon, Okotoks, St. Albert, and Wetaskiwin underwent conversions so what we did is we put in another application for an additional 131 communities that was made to the EUC and Fortis Alberta has now received approval to continue."

Conversions in Turner Valley will take place from July 2- 7, and in Vulcan from July 27- Aug. 3.
