A hometown hero will be honoured at the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

Constable Jeremy Perdue was an 11 year member of the RCMP, and served in Turner Valley since 2009.

Perdue passed away April 29, 2016 from complications due to Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a rare form of the disease.

In his memory a close friend of his, Joe Armstrong, as well as Perdue's eldest son Dallas created Walking for Jeremy team.

Armstrong says the OneWalk was a timely opportunity for him, and Perdue's family.

"A couple of years ago I had taken part in the ride to conquer cancer, and I was thinking about trying to find other avenues to participate, and given the timing, we've just observed a one year anniversary since Jeremy's passing, and in thinking about that, it was trying to find a way to honour him, and thinking in terms of if there's any way I can find something that his oldest son Dallas could possibly participate in."

Armstrong and Dallas will walk in Perdue's memory, and in hopes that research will help ensure no family has to suffer the loss of a loved one to cancer.

"My mother is a breast cancer survivor, but unfortunately I've lost a very dear friend, someone who was in the prime of his life, he was only 36 years old and he was taken in a relatively short period of time by this rare form of leukemia. That was certainly something that had a big impact on me, and obviously much more so on his family, and if there are ways that we can honour his memory, and in this case getting his oldest son involved is just great."

Team Walking for Jeremy must raise a minimum of $3,000 to participate in the walk, however they are hoping to beat that goal.

The OneWalk to Conquer Cancer takes place June 24, in Calgary.
