A pilot project called "On-It" through the Calgary Regional Partnership has won The Town Okotoks a Minister's Award.

The award of excellence for transit/accessible transportation innovation was given to the town, for the pilot project which Mayor Bill Robertson says will run public transit to the Somerset/Bridlewood LRT station in Calgary.

Mayor Bill Robertson says he's hoping that if the pilot project goes well, residents will be able to travel all over Alberta on public transit.

"The idea is one day to eventually be able to get on a bus in Okotoks and end up in Airdrie, or go out to Banff, or Canmore or, Strathmore," he says. "To be able to connect anywhere in the region on public transit"

Robertson says the pilot project is using a provincial subsidy of $500,000 for two years, which could change if demand is high enough.

"Any subsidies needed after that will be shared among the municipalities participating based on a population basis, and a usage basis."

The pilot project will start in September.
