At approximately 3:00pm Monday, Sept 11 some cargo on a train in Blackie caught fire.

Creosote soaked railway ties caused flames to shoot in the air and fill the sky with dark black smoke.

The fire departments of High River, Blackie and Heritage Pointe fought back the flames in windy conditions to get them under control and prevent spreading.

Senior firefighter with the Heritage Pointe Fire Dept, Chad Demers says, the fire was contained to one car.

"It's a bit difficult just because the ties are covered in creosote, causes some issues for us plus the sheer weight of that amount of debris."

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
