A popular late-Summer event returns to Okotoks on Sat. Aug 29, as the Foothills Highland Games go for another year.

It's the sixth year in a row for the games in Okotoks, after being held in High River for the previous 10 years.

Spencer Collins, the head of the games, says it's a combination of traditional Scottish culture and Canadian culture, with a number of events to take in during the day.

"We have the drum pipe and dance competitions, so that's a Highland dance, as compared to a Scottish dance, so we focus on the Highland dancing," he says. "The pipe and drums individual competition, and then the master pipes and drums happen in the afternoon, they just parade through, and that really is a good event for everybody to see."

As usual, a heavy games competition will be held as well, with caber toss and hammer throw competitions, and even a kid-friendly version of heavy games.

Collins says fans of the heavy games are in luck this year, as Okotoks will also play host to the Canadian Scottish Athletic Federation Games.

"The winner of that games that's taking place in Okotoks will then be named as the number one thrower for Canada," he says. "Those nine athletes that are competing also go on to compete in the World Championships against countries like Japan, believe it or not, who'll compete against Scotland and America and other countries."

The day wraps up with a Ceilidh, and once again Alberta's own Fraid Knot will provide the night's music.

Collins says the band has become as much of a tradition in Okotoks as the Ceilidh itself, and the dance is always the perfect way to cap off the day.

"They love coming to us," he says. "We book them every year, they put us in the calendar before we do, so they're going to perform again with us. Last year, we broke the dance floor at the party, we get pretty wild there. So, hopefully we don't literally bring the tent town, but we'll have a good time."

The games kick off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at Foothills Composite High School, and the Ceilidh gets going at 6:30 p.m.
