Close to $90,000 in debt has been swiped off the books by the town of High River.

Chief Financial Officer Kola Oladimeji explained, those responsible for the debts have left town and can't be located or their business has closed.

One, declared bankruptcy owing $58,254.

Oladimeji says just because they've been written off, it doesn't mean they've given up trying to get the debt paid.

In the case of the bankrupt business, he says, the town's filed a claim as a creditor.

The vast majority of that total is for unpaid utilities at just over $85,196.

Unpaid taxes account for $1,430 and Accounts Receivable for $2,866.

Usually bad debts are reviewed and written off annually, but because of the 2013 flood, this is the first time it's been done since 2012.
