Homeowners and residents tend to see a jump in energy bills over these colder months but they don't necessarily have to.

The town has some helpful tips and programs for locals to participate in to help keep those energy bills under control.

Interim environment and sustainability coordinator Stefan Martensson says the MyHEAT program, that was launched almost a year ago , is one of the programs as well as the Energy Conservation Rebate Pilot Project.

"Obviously we want to promote our Energy Conservation Rebate program and there is still some money left in that pot and that pot actually expires in a month. So we would really push for people to do their energy audits and the energy auditor will give you a whole list of items you can do to keep your bills down."

The energy audits might dip into residents wallets at the moment but will allow locals to save big time in the future and will help them to live more comfortably in their homes.

The MyHEAT program, which goes hand in hand with the rebate project, has been quite successful in its first year and Martensson says, has made quite the impact on Okotokians.

"We don't have the exact stats but judging on phone calls and emails regarding it I would say it's a huge success. People are talking about it and people are very curious and interested when they are calling and they are calling with very intelligent questions. So I'd say it's very successful."

MyHEAT allows residents to check out where heat is escaping from their houses and the rebate program produces residents with step by step recommendations on where they should invest their money for a more energy efficient home that will save on bills over time.

Martensson says other than participating in the programs people can always bundle up to save.

"If you want to save on your energy bills we would recommend that I know it is always nice to crank up that heat and enjoy a warm temperature inside but if you could slap on a thicker sweater instead then you will save substantially on your energy bills."
