The Town of High River's Arts and Culture Advisory Committee wants to know what residents think should be done to up-keep the murals downtown. Parks and Planning Supervisor Kim Unger says the town is running an online survey until June 10 at 4 pm to gather community feedback.

"We have these murals in town and there has been some question as to how we're going to deal with some of the murals that are deteriorating. I really think it should be up to the community how we go forward with the maintenance program. There's lots of people who have different opinions and we're just trying to gather those opinions to inform our decision making."

She says the committee to take the pulse of the community on how they can best move forward.

"Some people I have heard think that some of the murals are unsightly. I think it's important that we gather public opinion to determine what people think of our murals and how to go forward funding a maintenance program in the future."

Unger says there are many ways maintenance programs are funded, including tax-payer dollars, grant work, public and private funding. She says the town will unveil two new murals in June that tell a story of resiliency, and the other murals downtown have stories as well.

"I think art tells a story, like our new murals that are coming up right now will be telling a story. They'll be telling the story of our resiliency as a community and moving forward. I think the murals that we have in town for people that have lived here for a long time, they are part of their identity as a High Riverite."

Unger says the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee is looking for more members and hopes to have some youth join them as they create a maintenance plan for the murals. The committee is holding an open house on June 4 from 3 to 6 pm at the Culture Centre to discuss the murals with the public and hopefully gain some more members.
