The High River Autoplex is having a hard time getting rid of their old tires.

Whenever you buy a new set of tires, you pay an environmental levy which ensures the tires are recycled properly.

But that's not happening as often as it should according to High River Autoplex Service Manager Alyssa Fettes.

"If you don't have at least fifty tires sitting in our parking lot it's really difficult to get somebody to come and pick them up and we just do not have the room."

Fettes says something needs to change. "I think Liberty Tire is great and I think that they're a business and they have to operate as a business as well but they will not return your requests if you have less than fifty tires." She says tires continue to pile up and at times they will make other arrangements to have the tires removed.

Alberta Recycling Management is the association responsible for managing Alberta’s tire, electronics and paint recycling programs and they have two registered processors responsible for the pick up and recycling of tires in Alberta.

Manager Elisabeth Gray says there are options if the service isn't up to snuff.

Alberta Recycling Management's Elisabeth Gray.

"The 4H Foundation are able to service some of the more far-flung locations that need more regular service for a smaller amount of tires."

Gray says their numbers up to March of 2016 show 83% of user fees went to the collection and recycling of six million tires in Alberta.
