Have you got a lot to do this weekend?

And somehow you need to fit in a trip to the garden centre and you need to make some time to plant flowers and vegetables?

Well take a big breath and slow down because if you look at the calendar the May Long Weekend is a bit early this year, which means you have plenty of time to get started next weekend.

Katrina Diebolt owner of Vales Greenhouse says as a result there is no reason to rush.

"We still have one more weekend to go," said Diebolt.  "So if you find you have lots on the go this weekend, you will be okay, because it still is not June the next weekend, so you still have another good weekend to hit the gardening centres."

And it is best to tackle the job of cleaning and planting with a plan in place.

"The very first thing you want to do is go out into the yard and assess what should be coming up by now and maybe isn't. Maybe take some pictures and show them to the garden centre staff for advice."

She added you should also make notes on where the sun and shade land in your yard is so you can get the right plants for each space.

And if you are out this weekend and next there are certain plants you should get now.

"What you are really wanting to concentrate on is the flashy stuff. The annuals, the petunias, the basket stuffers and that is where this weekend and next really count."

She adds after the first of June go back to the garden centre and pick up the perennials, your shrubs and things you can plant much longer into the season.

'But you really want to make sure you get the flashy stuff so get the marigolds, the basket stuffer stuff and work on the containers and stuff closer to the home."
