You can test your spelling abilities while supporting a local group.

For the past 18 years literacy for life has been providing Foothills residents of all ages with literacy programming and funds from the Grate Groan-Up Spelling Bee will help to continue that.

Pam Guthrie-Fleming, event organizer, says literacy is more than reading and writing.

"It encompasses financial skills, getting along with others, understanding forms like application forms, even instructions on over the counter medication," she says, "It just encompasses everything and without those strong literacy skills life can be a real struggle."

Guthrie-Fleming says the spelling b has room for more teams to join.

"Leading up to that date we are looking for teams. We encourage any group to enter a team for the b it is a load of fun to participate. We have reduced the registration fee to $50."

There's also an opportunity to support Literacy for Life through their raffle. The winner will be able to choose between a trip to Las Vegas, a trip to Pebble Beach, and a Napa Valley wine tour. Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the Museum of the Highwood and at the Literacy for Life office.

The spelling bee will be held at the Wales Theatre in High River on Oct. 3 with doors opening at 12:30 p.m.
